Gastein - Habsburg's place of longing in the mountains

The ‘k. u. k. Bad Gastein’ has two dimensions: On the one hand, the atmosphere of the imperial spa and the glamorous spa business in hotel palaces can be felt in concentrated form, and on the other, perhaps the longing for the time of the crowns and comtesse resonates not only with visitors, but also with the people at the waterfall. In any case, the spa town in the high mountains avoids the horizontal. Hotels and cliffs pile up dramatically and the swings of history run just as vertically, which here only knows ‘at the top’ or ‘at the bottom’, but never ‘mediocre’. Nowhere else in Central Europe, however, is spa activity embedded in a more breathtaking backdrop. Three-thousand metre peaks rise up to the thermal baths and hotels. While the curtains are drawn elsewhere, a nightlife worthy of the name begins in Gastein. Urbanity, creativity and a dash of nonchalance are key qualities of Gastein that originated in the 19th century and have been rediscovered and reinterpreted by a young generation of guests, hoteliers and restaurateurs after decades of slumber.
