Gadaunerer Schlucht

Bad Hofgastein

The wild and romantic Gadaunererschlucht on the Gasteiner Höhenweg.

Voted Austria's most beautiful place in 2024 in the ORF TV programme ‘9 Plätze 9 Schätze’!

ATTENTION:  WINTER CLOSURE

The Gasteiner Höhenweg was built in 1934 and leads from Bad Hofgastein to Bad Gastein at a constant altitude of 1,000 metres. The bridge that led guests across the Gadauner Gorge was destroyed several times during storms, so around two decades later an almost 50 metre long tunnel was cut out of the rock at this point. The so-called ‘Katharinastollen’ enables guests to cross the gorge safely, with spectacular and exciting views in front of and behind the waterfall.
In 1978, the gorge was added to the list of registered natural monuments in the province of Salzburg. Observant visitors will immediately notice the geological features and the special flora. Stones can be seen ‘blooming’ and the pyrite-bearing rock can be seen weathering in different shades of colour. The panoramic view rounds off the experience and makes the Gadauner Gorge a worthwhile excursion destination.

Route description
