The shortest night of the year is celebrated in the Gastein Valley with an extraordinary festival: It seems as if the mountains around Gastein are on fire. This flaming spectacle is mystical to behold. It transports us for a few hours into a world full of magic and mystery. Shortly before nightfall, according to the old custom of the summer solstice, the bonfires in Gastein are lit, and chains of lights stretch across the mountain tops along the entire valley. An intoxicatingly fascinating night that you will never forget!

Mystical atmosphere and hard work

The mysticism that spreads through the Gastein Valley on this night is almost indescribable. But in order for this night to really be a magical experience, a lot of work and intensive preparations are required in advance by associations and private individuals in the Gastein Valley. For months, branches are gathered for the one evening, the anticipation increases from day to day. "Fia's Feia brenna", meaning "to burn for the fire", is what it is called in this country.

And when the longest day of the year then slowly turns into dusk, then lads and men go up to the mountains, hike along the most remote paths to light the fires on the peaks and ridges at nightfall.
